About This Project

Project Background

HAYAT has kicked off in June 2013 and is funded by the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security Fund (UNTFHS), the Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) and the Government of Japan. The program is jointly implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-HABITAT), the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

HAYAT follows an integrated rural development approach that aims at improving the socio-economic livelihoods of the targeted communities across multiple development sectors such as:

  • Infrastructure development and neighborhood upgrading.
  • Promotion of vertical cultivation and greenhouse agriculture.
  • Animal production and aquaculture.
  • Economic empowerment of women through Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs).
  • Employment support (especially for unemployed youth).
  • Upgrading productive clusters (I): palm dates.
  • Upgrading productive clusters (II): furniture workshops.
  • Health and social awareness raising.
  • Capacity building to local government and local NGOs and CSOs.
